Skin Cancer: Initial Symptoms, Characteristics, and Treatment

Skin cancer is reaching its peak in the USA currently. Skin cancer can affect any skin tone and can be fatal if not treated early. It is said that, unlike other cancer, the treatment of skin cancer is curable and the survival rate is 99.9%. For the early treatment, it is necessary to understand the initial symptoms of skin cancer and what is skin cancer. Let us find out more about it.

What Is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells in the skin in the form of moles, lesions, abnormal skin textures. It can attack a person of any age group and gender. Most skin cancer is common to them who are more likely to be in the exposure to harmful UV rays without any skin protection. Also, skin cancer occurs in the skin which comes more exposure to the sun.

There are three types of skin cancer:

● Basal cell carcinoma
● Squamous cell carcinoma
● Melanoma

Skin cancer can be easily prevented by using sun protection like high SPF sunscreen and limiting the exposure time to the sun. Check out for the abnormal growth of moles and changing skin texture in the skin. If any skin differences are noticed, you must seek professional help as soon as possible.

Characteristics of Different Types of Skin Cancer

Basal cell carcinoma: This happens to occur in the area where the skin is most exposed to the sun and is highly damaged by the harmful UV rays. Some of the initial symptoms that may develop are:

● The black or brown colored lesions
● A bleeding wound or sore that keeps returning
● A brown scar that develops even further.

Melanoma: It generally occurs in any part of the body but specifically originates in the moles. Melanoma in males mostly showed up in the face or trunk and for females it has been majorly in the lower legs. It occurs mostly in areas less exposed to sunlight.

Some of the Initial Symptoms of Melanoma Are:

● Asymmetrical moles that change texture and color.
● A brown scarring mole that regularly changes in shapes
● The liaison that is painful and burns.
● A small mole that has irregular edges and appears reddish, pink, or brown.

Squamous cell carcinoma: This type of skin cancer mostly shows up in darker people. It occurs in the area where the skin is exposed to the sun.

The Initial Symptoms Are:

● Dark pink patches over the skin
● Lesion or mole with scaly or crusted surface


Skin cancer is detectable. Skin cancer can eventually develop in any part of the skin, like the face, scalp, lips, ears, chest, neck, hands, arms. In the case of women majority of the case studies have shown that skin cancer develops in the legs. And for some of the cases, skin cancers have shown up in the body parts which rarely come in the sunlight like your genital areas, toenails, palm, fingernails.

Also, skin cancer affects even the darker complexation. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs in darker complexions. Even it mostly occurs in the area where the sunlight exposure is very less, like palms and genitals.
